Follow these steps to acquired permission for using copyrighted materials.

Step 1: Research the Copyright Status

Check the copyright notice and any records of the Copyright Office. Copyright notice is a statement of the copyright ownership placed on works or recordings of works. For digital media, the creator, copyright owner, and licensing terms may be available in the file's metadata.

Step 2: Contact the Copyright Owner

Contact the copyright owner as early as possible. Be aware that they may refer you to others. When composing your email request, make sure to include the following: 

  • The name of the author
  • The title of the work
  • The exact material you want to use
  • How you plan to use the work
  • Your intended audience
  • Whether the material will be sold
  • Your name, institution, and contact details
